Your body needs rest to adapt
After you exercise, your body needs rest to adapt to the new load you have placed on your body in the form of exercise. For example, if you run for 20 - 30 minutes for the first time, you have burdened your body with an activity it was not used to.
Now your body needs rest so that it can strengthen itself. Once it strengthens itself, then you will feel less tired the next time you run for 20 - 30 minutes. With time, running 20 - 30 minutes will seem easy to you because your body will have adapted to it. Now you can increase your running time to 40 minutes.
If you increase your time to 40 minutes, your body will recover during the resting period and adapt itself to the new burden of running for 40 minutes. In this manner your body allows you to improve in your exercise.
Lack of rest prevent adaptation
If, however, you run for 20 minutes and do not provide your body with adequate rest and/or nutrition, then your body will not be able to recover and adapt to the burden you have placed on it.
The next time you try to run for 20 minutes, you will find it more difficult than the first time you ran for 20 minutes because your body did not get the rest it needed to adapt to running for 20 minutes.
If you continue to force your body to run for 20 minutes without giving it proper rest, you will eventually injure yourself.
Too much exercise leads to overtraining
After you exercise, your body needs rest so that it can adapt to the new load you have placed on it. Once the body adapts, you can then further burden it and excel.
If, however, you do not provide it rest and continue to exercise, you will experience overtraining. Overtraining is a condition in which a person experiences
- fatigue
- lethargy
- fever
- depression
- decreased performance
- loss of sexual drive
- inability to concentrate
- nausea
Hence, whenever you perform any exercise, you need to give your body proper rest and nutrition afterwards. Otherwise you risk injury and overtraining.
